Aref Rayes

Lebanon, b.1928 - 2005

Painter and sculptor, Aref Rayess started his career as a self-taught artist and lived in Africa for some time. He later trained at the studios of Fernand Léger, André Lhote and Ossip Zadkine in Paris while studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, (1948-1957). His paintings carry the imprints of his environment, whether social, cultural or political, that he depicts with deep commitment and simple interpretation, thus helping it to reach the viewer effortlessly.
