Faik Hassan

Iraq, b.1914-1992

Painter and pedagogue, Faik Hassan graduated from École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris (1938) and upon his return to Baghdad founded the Painting Department in the Institute of Fine Arts in 1939/1940 where he taught and was the one to introduce impressionism into modern Iraqi art through the Pioneers Group that he established. Throughout his career, he never diverted from impressionism in depicting local landscapes, horses, and folk customs.
