Ismail Sheikhly

Iraq, b.1927-2002

After finishing the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, Ismail Sheikhly joined the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, graduating in 1951.  A pioneer Iraqi artist, he recorded scenes of Iraqi cities with faceless figures, mostly women, draped in their abayas, going about their simple everyday activities, in flowing vertical lines and temperate colours on an impressionistic backgraound.
