About

The talk will be in Arabic.
Join us in the next meetup of “Hiwar Art Club” for an online talk, hosting artist and professor of art criticism and aesthetics, Dr. Yasser Mongy from Egypt, who will speak to us about a selection of artworks by pioneering modern and contemporary Egyptian artists, that are currently on view in the exhibition “Contemporary African Art” at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.
In this talk our guest speaker will highlight and analyze the oeuvres of Egyptian artists: Adam Hanein, Hamed Nada, Salah Taher, Inji Aflatoun, Ragheb Ayad, Saif Wanly, Gazbia Sirry, Ahmed Nawar and Ahmed Moustafa. A selection of their artworks, housed in the Permanent Collection of the Jordan National Gallery, will be addressed through an analytical and critical lens. In addition, their artworks will be framed by looking into their comparative historical contexts, while investigating the very criteria by which we apply the labels of “pioneers” or “precursors” to these artists, as well as their positionality vis-à-vis questions of originality and contemporaneity within measures of regional and global art.
