“Reduce / Reuse / Recycle”

In her project r e d u c e / r e u s e / r e c y c l e Ulrike Koeb creates appealing images composed of food, leftovers, packaging material (especially plastic) and carelessly thrown away items. The works created present a vivid reminder to raise awareness about the global waste problem and its threat to the environment.
Nature runs in cycles so it does not produce waste. The regenerative system of the circular economy takes the cycle of nature as a model and tries to achieve multiple use and a particularly sustainable and efficient use of raw materials in order to avoid or reduce waste and waste emissions.
Existing materials (equipment, clothing… etc) should be used, reused, repaired, passed on or shared for as long as possible. Our consumption patterns must change step-by-step, and as soon as possible for the good of future generations.
The Image Festival Amman is organized by Darat al Tasweer.
Ulrike Koeb, Austrian, lives and works in Vienna as a food and still-life photographer. After assisting renowned photographers, she attended masterclasses in photography in Maine and New Mexico, USA. Subsequently, she experimented intensively with Black and White Photography and studied old photography techniques such as Platin Palladium Printing. She also started coloring
her black and white images.
Her interest in photography was originally sparked by a love for detail and passion for color, light and style which led her into artistic photography.
In addition to her commercial magazine- and book projects her photographs have appeared in numerous publications and have also been featured in group and solo exhibitions in Oman, England, South Korea, The Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and Finland.

From the opening of the photography exhibition ‘Bedu’ by Farah Foudeh, part of the Image Festival Amman #7 under the theme ‘Home at Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.

Farah Foudeh
Lagos born, Farah grew up in Nigeria, later moving to cities like Amman, Washington DC, NYC and is now based in Barcelona where she completed a Masters in Photography and Design. Farah uses photography as a tool to study our understanding of the world and its impact on perceptions and prejudices. She is inspired by the earliest use of the photographic medium, and its use in the portrayal of events and regions. She aims to push the boundaries of the viewer’s understanding of photography as a representational medium by working in performative ways that address the presence of the lens and question its role.
Bedu
‘Bedu’ addresses issues of identity and representation by studying the earliest Orientalist Western portrayal of the Bedouin man. Within this context, the Bedouin man was constantly performing for the voyeuristic gaze. Portrayed as immune to time, development and modernity. She collaborated with the Bedouin men of the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan to create an inclusive and reflective body of work. It is a performative play with the viewer’s vision of the man, the desert and the relationship between both. This dance within the landscape, hopes to emphasis the performative role that plays into the photographic process, and its limitations as a representative medium

“Remote Closeness” Open Call

The Lab of the Future* invites creatives from various artistic backgrounds (performing arts, music and audio productions, visual and fine arts, poetry, video, film, design) to submit artworks as well as ideas for innovative artistic productions for the Remote Closeness event. .With this event, we are welcoming creatives to develop new approaches to remotely connect to, and interact with, each other and the world.
The event will take place in Jordan in July 2021 as part of “Factory’s Public Art Program” and will consist of an online exhibition, a public program with talks and workshops, an interdisciplinary exhibition at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (JNGFA), along with art trails through different neighborhoods of selected Jordanian cities, where QR codes link to certain artworks exhibited within the event.
All forms of art are welcome, whether physical or digital. If selected, they will be featured in the online exhibition and accessed virtually by the public from different points of entry (by scanning QR codes distributed throughout the country, on the event’s official Instagram account, other social media). Hence, if you intend to produce a physical work or a performative piece, it needs to be realized in a way that is compatible with being displayed digitally (for example by using videos, photographs, recordings, etc.). Only a few selected works will be shown in the physical exhibition at the JNGFA.
Artworks may interpret Remote Closeness in different ways, whether in content or form:
//Tackle notions of isolation caused by the new pandemic restrictions.
//Research / address the concepts of physical and emotional distance / closeness.
//Find approaches to engage the audience despite the distance.
//Create participatory experiences that draw the audience to co-create.
//Utilize the digital realm to create bonds, beyond the barrier of the screen.
//Push the boundaries of ‘forbidden’ proximities.
//Propose novel ways to utilize online platforms to display art productions.
The idea is not only to make your work available through a virtual platform, but to somehow adapt your work to create a tangible connection with the audience. How can it be engaging? How can you elicit some sort of participation? Or maybe even co-creation?
Application requirements:
// Application is open to creative practitioners based in Jordan and beyond
// Applications should be submitted in English or Arabic
// Applications must be submitted by May 17th by completing the online application form.
In case you submit an idea for a new production and you are selected, your production should be delivered by July 3rd and submitted in a format that can be digitally displayed (high quality video, recordings, pictures)
Applicants will be notified by June 4th.
Event dates: July 21st – July 25th
Selection criteria:
The selection is based on curatorial decisions. The jury is composed of the team members of the Lab of the Future and representatives from the organizing institutions (the JNGFA, the Goethe-Institut in Jordan and the Institut Français de Jordanie). Criteria that will be considered in the selection process are:
Originality, innovation and creativity of the concept/idea for the production
Compatibility with digital exhibition formats, whether production is digital or physical
Relevance of the art work to the overall theme
A balanced representation of different artistic genres
Artist and Production Fees:
For new productions: 300-500 JOD (depending on the nature of the production)
Lending fees for existing art works to be showcased in the framework of the event: 150 JOD
In addition, there is a limited provision for extra production fees that may be needed in case of larger productions. It will be awarded following the selection process and based on the applications received.
Copyrights:
In case your artwork/your production is selected, the organizing institutes will claim shared copy-rights for non-commercial purposes in order to share and publish the productions in the framework of the event and online (details will be laid out in the contract with the selected artists).
* The Lab of the Future is an interdisciplinary cultural research and experimentation project with the purpose of exploring the future of art events in the age of the new normal. It is run by a group of nine cultural practitioners from various backgrounds in Jordan and organized and supported by Factory’s Public Art Program / the JNGFA, the Goethe-Institut in Jordan, the Institut Français de Jordanie and funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund.

“Black Swan: Unpredictable Future“ festival, focuses on the extreme impact of rare and unpredictable events and the human tendency to find explanations for these events. It also stresses the possibility of overturning all the values we protect and believe today because of the emergence of situations that we believed were impossible or nonexistent. Through the artists’ works of our time, the Open Media Art Festival 2020 began with a few questions that imagine the “unpredictable future” and ask what it means or how it will affect our lives. From these questions, we are asking how artists explore and examine the future such as Black Swan in our time and Black Swan in the near future will be introduced and presented which will deliver various perceptions and attitudes of the artists toward the future.

“Nebulous” & “Graph’Art” Exhibition (Amman Art Week)

Ground floor – “Nebulous: imagination, dreams & identity search”

“In the haze of an invisible energy called Orgone, created in 1930 by Wihelm Reich, Nebulous is guiding you in the world inside an artist’s head and vision. It is to the visitor to explore each artwork’s emotion, whether it is fears, happiness, curiosity or anxiety. That primal anxiety that makes artists feel so raw exposed and liberated at the same time.

The terminology Art therapy is used extensively nowadays, but it would be interesting to ask ourselves – isn’t Art Always a therapy? Pictorial artistic expression was always used as tool to express, remember, treat nostalgia, and if we go back even further, the cave man pictorial art could have been a way to treat the cave man’s loneliness? Why not try to understand the prism that the artists see through by looking at a range of some of the most personal works of their careers.”

Victoria Gandit Lelandais, Curator

Projected: Orgone energy is a hypothetical universal life force. Orgone was conceived as the anti-entropic principle of the universe, a creative substratum in all of nature. Orgone was seen as a massless, omnipresent substance, but more closely associated with living energy than inert matter. It could coalesce to create organization on all scales, from the smallest microscopic units to macroscopic structures like organisms, clouds, or even galaxies”

Second floor – “Graph’Art”

“All terms related to graphic design, architecture, graphism and visual arts tend to confuse the public. Instead of explaining, the sometimes complicated, relation between them, Graph’Art will show you how they interact, play and complete each other perfectly.

From traditional calligraphy to a de-structured lineal work, through graphic installation and sculptures the public will explore each dimension known in this world. We will navigate the universe of forms, shapes and visions that will clearer our understanding of graphic art and artistic design, in the Arab world.”

Victoria Gandit Lelandais, Curator

“Lyrical Abstraction 1945-1995”

HRH Princess Wijdan Al Hashemi, President of the Royal Society of Fine Arts, and in the presence of the French Ambassador to Amman, “Lyrical Abstraction 1945-1995” Exhibition Opening happened on Monday 11/11/2014.

This exhibition comes within the activities of the Jordanian-French cultural week organized by the Jordanian-French Chamber of Commerce «Cavrage» in cooperation with the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts with the Diane du Paris Gallery.

The exhibition continues at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts Building 2, 1st floor until 27/11/2014

The turn of the 20th century with Vassily Kandinsky Abstract Watercolor (1910) and With the Black Ark (1912) as the first artist expressions of non representation in the West, and Kazimir Malevich extended the process of exploding forms started among others, by Cubism. Paris before the Second World War was in a state of complete artistic effervescence. The capital gathered the iconic figures of abstraction who had come from all horizons: Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondriaan and Paul Klee…

From the 1940s, Abstract Art divided into two major trends: Geometric Abstraction on the one hand plunged its roots into the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, a more audacious trend took shape. The great pioneers worked in the shadows: Gérard Schneider, Georges Mathieu, Hans Hartung and Pierre Soulages, for example, concentrated on the expression of emotions, feelings, the “internal self”, thus giving birth to a form of painting that had never been seen before: Lyrical Abstraction.

There are as many expressions of this Lyrical Abstraction as there are strong artistic personalities. Among the leading figures, four fundamental artists are presented here: Gérard SCHNEIDER (1896-1986), Hans HARTUNG (1904-1989), Olivier DEBRÉ (1920-1999) and Huguette ARTHUR BERTRAND (1920-2005). Four major artists of the 20th century, four key figures of the Parisian and global art world.

Gérard Schneider is the oldest member of this new generation. Originally from Switzerland, he arrived in Paris in 1916 and registered at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Fernand Cormon who also trained Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. “Lyrical Abstraction is above all embodied by Schneider just as Cubism is by Picasso” says Michel Ragon. Schneider fervently continued his study of the expression of his internal self. His broad brushstrokes and the audacity of his palette created works whose power is volcanic. With his friends Hans Hartung and Pierre Soulages: the Lyrical Abstraction trio, he exhibited amongst others at the Galerie Lydia Conti and then with the great dealer of Lyrical Abstraction, Samuel Kootz in New York. His friend Hans Hartung, originally from Germany, also deepened his investigations into abstraction in isolation. “The painter of lightening”, his work is characterized by free gestures, immortalized by black, cutting, graphic marks, afterwards laid out on colored planes.

A rare female painter of this glorious artistic period, close to Hans Hartung and Olivier Debré among others, Huguette Arthur-Bertrand included her work completely in post-war Lyrical Abstraction: her tight graphic manner, typical of the 1950s-1960s, later evolved towards gestures that became more and more free, like a serene echo to her final years, those of the maturity of an oeuvre that was fully accomplished. As for Olivier Debré, he is the major figure of French Color Field, the “European Rothko”. His work corresponds to a contemplative  abstraction, “fervent” abstraction according to him, from which emotion springs, embodied for him by the sign. A painter of large spaces, his work has often escaped from the format imposed by the easel to flourish in large scale works, especially on stage curtains, such as those of the New Opera House of Hong Kong (1989) commissioned by the Louis Vuitton Foundation for the Opera and Music and that of the New Opera House of Shangai.

Today it is a privilege to present this concentration of talents and witnesses to history: this anthology of Lyrical Abstraction, from its beginnings in the 1940s in full artistic effervescence, until its uninhibited blossoming in the 1960s and 1970s and its full maturity in the 1980s and 1990s.

(AWA) will deliver a unique program of activities geared toward showcasing the many faces of the region’s vibrant art scenes, in addition to creating a well-rounded platform for probing the challenges and opportunities facing the region’s art market.

Organized by Jordanian Arts and Entertainment Management Company ArtMedium, AWA will encompass 10 days of activities spanning all aspects of the arts and involving all members of the community.

Its schedule, which invites art to take center stage, begins on September 6th 2013, with a VIP launch event hosted at the National Gallery of Fine Arts.

Boasting a guest list of executives, well established and progressive artists, art collectors, diplomats, and representatives of the media, the event is anticipated to be a grand commencement for an expressive week to follow by all stakeholders of the art scene in Jordan and the region.

The evening will then be trailed by a two-day forum titled “Connect Art”, featuring an agenda packed with interactive presentations, workshops, and discussion panels. Set to be the hub were new perceptions are born, the forum will shed light on the evolution of the regional art scene, artistic freedom of expression, and the social structure surrounding practicing artists, amongst other pressing topics.

Also worth looking out for, is the AWA Contemporary Art Exhibition which is scheduled to be held between September 6th and September 15th at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. This unique exhibition will showcase contemporary art pieces created by Jordanian and Middle Eastern artists.

AWA is also lending a space for Design to flourish, through a show titled “Design Now”. The show will feature a series of presentations, showcasing the latest design trends adopted in the field, curated by Nabad Art Gallery.

From another angle, art galleries across Amman will also be bustling with activity, showcasing special openings and art shows throughout the AWA event. Galleries to look out for include; the Zara Gallery, Dar Al Anda, The Orient Gallery, The Studio, Nabad Art Gallery, Jacaranda Images, Foresight Art Gallery and Orfali Gallery. ‘Park it Here’ will be the destination at the National Gallery of Fine Arts’ park adding its colorful splash to the Art Week Amman evenings, hosting daily performances by musicians, dancers, and expressionists.

Combining fun with learning, AWA’s program will also invite students to enjoy tours, film screenings, and cross cultural artistic exchanges all set to be held in collaboration with foreign cultural centers.

With its agenda boasting a “something for everybody” approach, the event is echoing a mission to place Jordan’s art scene on the international map of aesthetics.

Commenting further on the launch, Founder and General Manager of ArtMedium, Sarah Abu Alia says, “We anticipate Art Week Amman to be a great opportunity to showcase all of Amman’s art outlets and initiatives, and boost the city’s presence within international cultural arenas. An event of this magnitude will surely provide year-round inspiration for artists across the region. With this understanding, we are very proud to play a role in re-shaping the dynamic culture of Amman, and in creating an avenue for artists and creative individuals to freely express themselves.”

Abu Alia also pointed out that the region has a relatively young population, with the youth segment making up the larger demographic of Jordan in particular. She also affirmed that the youth of Jordan has been demonstrating exceptional levels of talent, and it is this talent that needs to be placed in the spotlight for other nations to take notice and to learn from.

“We live in an age where news travels fast, and with the help of smartphones and social media, the population is well aware of world artistic trends. With this awareness comes a need to place local talents in the international spotlight, and such an end can only be achieved by creating avenues for idea exchange. Therefore, we, at ArtMedium, feel that this event is ideal for spearheading this healthy exchange forward and consequently pushing Jordan’s cultural development towards new heights of prosperity,” she added.

ArtMedium is a forward thinking arts and entertainment production and management company that works on bringing all kinds of art to people, whether it be visual art, music, or theater. It is worth noting that ArtMedium had previously held a series of successful art events including: Souq Fann and the Amman Street Art Fair. These events were all attended by thousands of local art enthusiasts, and this success has inspired the Company to now venture into the regional art scene as well.

Secret Journey- Amman

New York-based Yoshiko Chuma and Madaba-based Ryuji Yamaguchi present a multimedia experimental dance performance at The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Using the School of Hard Knocks method, created by Chuma and furthered by Yamaguchi, twenty highly skilled dancers will collaborate from their different backgrounds: from dabke to break-dancing and from Jabal Nuzha to Lweibdeh.

With both Japanese artists having been engaged with Amman since 2007, “Secret Journey: Amman” is a chaotic multilayered documentation of their experiences with the people and the landscape of the city. Using a variety of measures such as video, spoken texts, moving bodies in space, and props emerging on red cafeteria trays, the performance dynamically poses the question: how does one frame an experience?

Here’s are samples from July 2019:

This presentation also marks the formal launching of a new organization Midan: Amman Dance Lab ميدان: مختبر عمان للرقص. Midan is a figurative meeting ground for dance in Amman, promoting dialogue and collaboration across genre, geography, and socioeconomic class.

Yoshiko Chuma (conceptual artist, choreographer/artistic director of The School of Hard Knocks) has been an important and utterly unique figure in the dance scene of New York City since the 1980s. Chuma has consistently produced thought-provoking work that is neither dance nor theater nor film nor any other pre-determined category. Her career has spanned 40 years and 35 countries, working with over 2000 artists along the way. In Jordan and Palestine between 2007 and 2016, Yoshiko has directed and produced 6 major dance productions in collaboration with Ryuji Yamaguchi.

Ryuji Yamaguchi, originally from Japan, is a dancer and educator based in Madaba, Jordan. In 2007, Ryuji moved to Jordan as a founding faculty member at King’s Academy, a coeducational boarding high school with a strong local identity and financial aid program. With Yoshiko Chuma, Ryuji has produced six major productions in Jordan and Palestine, invited over 40 Japanese and American artists to the region, and worked alongside Jordanian and Palestinian artists. Ryuji also collaborates with Hungarian dancer Rita Gobi with their duo, Vibration. Ryuji is a member of Yoshiko Chuma and The School of Hard Knocks.

Statement:

If we have to choose between black and white (as an example), and we say we want both, we’ll end up having an option we didn’t expect, in our example grey, with none of the things we wanted. As a human being, we have that hunger that never gets satisfied. If we aren’t able to choose and have the fear of losing one thing only? and afraid of making mistakes, we end up losing everything and feel guilty. This is how I reached to express what happened to me if you have two things and you chose both of them at the same time and/or place, you will get hurt by yourself and you will probably lose them both.

IN/OUT Festival

IN/OUT Jordan Public Art Festival

“An art, by and for the people, in the common space that is the street.”

IN/OUT, International public art festival is an initiative from FACTORY for cultural mediation to establish new ways of thinking about the relationship between art, society, public, museums and institutions. This year’s festival includes 33 art projects selected from more than 100 participating projects from Jordan and abroad. All projects are selected by an international scientific committee through an open call from FACTORY by the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. The program is implemented with workshops and talks always in search of mediation for the democratization of culture.
All projects come from different backgrounds of art, performance, music, contemporary dance, video art, projections, photography, sculpture, installations and graffiti, all going around social, economic and environmental topics that touch the local community, to be implemented in public areas in Jabal Al Weibdeh and Abdali district to be available to the public throughout the festival period.

In the infinity of small contacts that occur in the street, on the sidewalk, in the pharmacy, in the kiosk, each banal in itself, a sensitivity arises altogether for the “public” character of individuals, a social network of respect and trust. -Jane Jacobs

Due to our believe that a creative society builds bridges and not walls, we seek through the inclusion of workshops and talks, to bring a heterogeneous audience to share, experience and participate in IN/OUT. We are committed to a democratic public art, from and for citizens, in a specific social and spatial environment, in search of dialogue.

“The Shapes of Water” Exhibition

As part of Amman Design Week 2019 events, The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in cooperation with the Embassy of Italy in Jordan will be hosting an exhibition entitled “Shapes of Water” which is an international design project led by architect Silvana Annicchiarico, and promoted by Triennale Design Museum and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Water governance and its use have always been issues of planning interest. However, since water-to-drink is perceived as a limited resource, it has become more and more a matter of design – precious as a commodity, business element – and a status of quality. The scarcity of water and the attempts to promote an increasingly rational use of this resource is an extremely important issue for Jordan.

Join us from 4-12 October 2019 at the The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts building 2.

Darat Al Tasweer The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts The French Institute in Jordan Cordially invite you to the photography exhibition “Gypsies” by Josef Koudelka as part of the Image Festival Amman #8
6:00 pm Monday 1 April 2019
At The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts – Building 1
The exhibition continues until 30 April 2019

The exhibition is in collaboration with Magnum Photos and it is the first printed exhibitions to be hosted in Jordan from the touring exhibitions of Magnum Photos

Josef Koudelka

Josef Koudelka, born in Moravia, made his first photographs while a student in the 1950s. About the same time that he started his career as an aeronautical engineer in 1961 he also began photographing Gypsies in Czechoslovakia and theater in Prague. He turned full-time to photography in 1967.
The following year, Koudelka photographed the Soviet invasion of Prague, publishing his photographs under the initials P. P. (Prague Photographer) for fear of reprisal to him and his family. In 1969, he was anonymously awarded the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal for those photographs.
Koudelka left Czechoslovakia for political asylum in 1970 and shortly thereafter joined Magnum Photos. In 1975, he brought out his first book Gypsies, and in 1988, Exiles. Since 1986, he has worked with a panoramic camera and issued a compilation of these photographs in his book Chaos in 1999. Koudelka has had more than a dozen books of his work published, including Invasion Prague 68 (2008), and, most recently, La Fabrique d’Exils (2017).
Significant exhibitions of his work have been held at the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; the Hayward Gallery, London; the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam; the Institute of Chicago; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Gypsies

Between 1962 and 1971, Josef Koudelka travelled through his native Czechoslovakia and beyond to rural Romania, Hungary, France and Spain. His main subject was the Romany Gypsies. Drawn to their nomadic lifestyle, rituals and customs, Koudelka took on a nomadic lifestyle on his own, often travelling with little more than a camera, rucksack and a sleeping bag as he journeyed into his subject matter.
Koudelka’s stark images depict the simplicity of Gypsy life, but he does not present their situation as a social problem that should somehow be fixed. Instead, he shows the Gypsies as perpetual outsiders, and their lives as a primal mix of glee and wonder, sorrow and mystery.

“Mediterranean” Exhibition

Darat Al Tasweer, The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, The Embassy of Italy in Jordan Cordially invite you to the photography exhibition “Mediterraneo” by Mimmo Jodice as Part of the Image Festival Amman #8
6:00 pm Monday 1 April 2019
At The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts – Building 1
The exhibition continues until 30 April 2019

Mimmo Jodice

Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples. His name is well known in the history of Contemporary Photography.
In early 1960’s he began to experiment different materials, abstract forms and all linguistic and technical aspects of Photography.
During the 1970’s he was in contact with the most important avant-garde artists, such as Warhol, Beuys, Kounelis, De Dominicis, Paolini, Sol Lewitt, Kosuth and many others.
In 1969 he began teaching Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he taught until 1994.
His first solo exhibition was held in Urbino in 1968. Since 1980 he developed a new perspective in which human figure was no longer the protagonist. A double thread runs through his work:
a surreal and uneasy vision of urban landscapes, and a research of his roots and the myths of Mediterranean.

Mediterranean

Mimmo Jodice’s artistic shots dedicated to the Mediterranean interpret at best the spirit of Italian cultural diplomacy in the geographical space who’s our country is a vital center, crossroad of past and present, crucible of cultures and traditions. This constitutes the core of Jodice’s extraordinary study, between statutes and human faces, ancient ruins of history and plentiful landscapes that seem to hope for a bright future. Now more than ever, this call of the shared cultural heritage which characterises the Mediterranean as a place of peaceful coexistence and richness of dialogue and contamination, is necessary to build bridges against the walls of indifference and intolerance.

“Lines Of Subjectivity”

From the collection of Barjeel Art Foundation, the exhibition showcases an elite group of Arab contemporary artists such as Margeurite Nakhla, Saad Al Khadem, Mona Saudi, Ibrahim Salahi, Habib Srour, Ezekiel Baroukh, Elias Zayat, Faik Hasan, Khalil Gibran, George Hanna Sabbagh, Abdelhadi Al Gazzar, Abdul Kadir Al Rassam, Huguette Caland, Hatem ElMekki, Clea Badaro, Ervand Demerjian, Kamel Mostafa, Paul Guiragossian, Louay Kayyali, Abdullah Al Qassar, Ahmed Nesha’at Al Zuaby and Mohammed Nagi

Enquiry into the training and exposure artists from North Africa and West Asia received at the turn of the 20th century, as well as ways in which it impacted their practice and outlook towards representation drove the selection of works for this exhibition. Changing social and political milieu during this time, layered with the artists’ academic backgrounds and travel histories played into the shifting methods and strategies employed to tackle familiar subjects

This exhibition addresses these fluctuations and evolving stances on depiction through arguably two of the most long-established genres in the history of art – that of representing people and places. While certainly not complete or presented as an unbroken developmental continuum, this compilation of work drawn from the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation demonstrates a number of common directions and highlights milestones and patterns in the evolution of techniques, methodologies, and reasons for depicting bodies and landscapes in changing contexts. From a naturalistic representation of subjects, to the flattening out of space and subsequent experiments with different degrees of abstraction, always coupled with the artists’ subjective observation and understanding of the world, these works reveal the breadth of the spectrum of influences, interests and investigations carried out in the region in the 20th century

He puts them in boats to start spontaneous journeys, It takes them to new heights, stories that vividly describe the art of silhouettes, with the beauty of the used materials and the their harmony, where ceramics blend with iron, metals with paper paste .. ”

Different global concepts and subjects appear in the artist’s works such as heads, masks, boats, human and animal bodies… The artist has the ability to move from one form to another smoothly, like the free creator who is tirelessly looking for symbols that represent what we can not understand with logic only, using iron, aluminum, porcelain, glass and paper, and leaving it to coexist in harmony.

“Empathy & Craft In The 21st Century”

You are cordially invited to the group exhibition “Empathy and Craft in the 21st Century” which marks the conclusion of a four week series of workshops that invited local and international artists to converge and investigate through various art forms the concept of “intersectionality” – the idea that we all inhabit multiple identities at once, and are affected by related systems of social injustice and discrimination. The term, being actively explored in 21st century art and activism was coined by civil rights advocate Kimberly Willaims Crenshaw.

In the past, labels such as gender, class, race and religion have tended to label us as one thing, when the reality is that we are complex beings. How do these labels keep us from having empathy for one another and what role can art making have in creating empathy and connection? How does the concept of intersectionality help liberate ourselves from old ideas and forms, both in how we think and what we make, and allow us to explore new ones? The artworks filling the experimental space of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts stand for the creative attempts in using craft to begin answering these questions.
