Voices of the Reef: Season 1- Sondos Abuladas

01 Nov 2024 - 12 Dec 2024

About

Sondos Abuladas

A Jordanian artist and doll maker. She received her BA in Visual Arts from The University of Jordan in 2021, specializing in drawing and painting. Her work features an array of characters, each embodying different emotions, often expressed with sadness, but portrayed in an ostentatious and sarcastic manner.
To Sondos, sarcasm is a way of engaging with the world, transforming sorrow into a relatable and universal narrative. This approach not only makes her art more engaging but also simplifies the complexities in her subjects. She places particular emphasis on the eyes, which she considers the mirrors of emotions. By embracing strangeness and deviating from the ordinary, she finds the freedom to express her innermost feelings more vividly in her work.

Work Statement:

For the sake of an eye, a meadow is sacrificed

What it seems to be is that if we were not human, we would be corals and fish!
The world in the seas is hidden under a strange cover of familiarity, as if it were a projection of that life
on land; you will see flowers and trees, mountains, big brains, mushrooms, and even elephant ears down
there. except that, when wet, they have another name; coral!
And upon a deeper encounter, you’ll see your companions and people around you in everything; the
behaviors and desires of creatures in the sea are not very different from ours!
Everything down there has companionship all of it unites with something else, as the soul was told to
be.
Some of it flows naturally in reverence, some follow others and blend into their shadows, some sleep all
the time, and others never stop digging in the depths or collecting and piling up things, just like us. We
do not know life outside the water, I mean outside the land!
Coral has a desire for life like a mother’s desire for children, and fish have a desire to move like children’s
desire to walk. The sea has ancient eyes that gather all the memories of this land, like the eyes of the
walls of my grandmother’s house.
Perhaps if it were to be something else, it would be a family of twelve members, or maybe eleven… who
knows!
If I were not a human, I would be a turtle with algae growing on it. And you?
