Kamal Amin Awad

Egypt, b.1923-1979

Pioneer of engraving in Egyptian modern art, Kamal Amin Awad graduated from the College of Fine Arts in Cairo (1947) and continued his training in etching at the Institute of Arts of the Book in Barbino, Italy 1953/54 and Estene Institute for Printing (1955-1956) and École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris graduating in 1954. In his monochrome etchings, Awad expresses his own commentary regarding various social issues while using Arabic letters as an explosive decorative element in the background of the work.
