Hussein Bicar
Egypt, b.1913-2002
Painter, pedagogue, art critic and musician, Hussein Bikar is one of the pioneers of Egyptian modern art whose training was at the School of Fine Art in Cairo, graduating in 1933. He was art teacher in Egypt and Morocco until 1959 and was the one to introduce photojournalism into Egypt and one of the first artists to introduce artistic illustrations into children’s book. Bikar’s stylised realistic style, with its pure lines, balanced masses and tranquil colours exude a dramatic and quiet sensuality.
