Jamal Badran

Palestine, b.1908 - 1999

Jamal Badran was the first Palestinian to study at the School of Arts and Decorations in Cairo graduating in 1927.  He continued his training at the Central School of Art and Design in London (1934-37) where he trained in ceramics, metalwork, textile design, and bookbinding.  Since 1940, Badran trained numerous students in calligraphy, arabesque design, and applied arts at his studio and Unesco schools. After al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was destroyed by arson in 1968, he undertook the arduous task of recreating its architectural decorations for its renovation. His work in various media adheres to strict traditional rules of Arabic calligraphy and Arabesque design.
