Mohammed Naghi

Egypt, b.1888-1956

A painter from the generation of pioneers of Egyptian art, who combined the study of law with art. He studied law at the University of Lyon in France (1906-1910) and obtained a bachelor’s degree. He studied painting under the Italian artist Bernalli in Alexandria (1906) and traveled to Italy to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence (1911-1914). He worked with the French painter André Lhote. Upon his return from Italy, he rebelled against the academic school of painting and showed influence from the Impressionist school and the painter Claude Monet. He was the first Egyptian director of the Higher School of Fine Arts in Cairo.
