Ragheb Ayyad
Egypt, b.1892 - 1982
Painter and pedagogue, Raghib Ayyad was a graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Cairo (1911), and later became a catalyst in the founding of the Egyptian Academy in Rome. In 1925, he went to Rome to study painting, decoration and stage design, and taught at the College of Applied Arts upon his return. Ayyad then went on to teach at the School of Fine Arts before becoming director of the Museum of Modern Art in 1950. He chose simple Egyptian subjects from the countryside, interpreting them through strong expressive lines and economy in colour variation.
