Tamam Alkhal
Palestine, b.1935
Tamam Akhal was among the refugees who fled to Lebanon after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. By joining the Higher Institute for Women Art Teachers in Cairo in 1953 she became the first Palestinian woman artist to acquire formal art training after 1948. Like her husband, Ismail Shammout, her compositions revolve around intensely emotional and national Palestinian subjects, depicted in figurative naturalism.
