Elias Zayat
Syria, b. 1935-2022
Elias Zayat is one of Syria’s pioneer modern artists. He started his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia and then continued in Cairo (1958-1962). In 1974 he obtained a degree in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He draws on techniques and shapes found in the icons of the Eastern Church to express his philosophy and politics concerning national and public-spirited issues.
